诸暨珍珠养殖始于1960年代，1969年开始人工养殖淡水珍珠。山下湖镇逐步发展为珍珠交易集散地，建成华东国际珠宝城。历经半个多世纪发展，从原料供应向珍珠饰品、珍珠化妆品、珍珠保健品深加工延伸。2025年5月成功举办世界珍珠大会，2025年全产业链产值达520亿元。
